They may be little, but they have big imaginations.

Alina Pete, creator of Weregeek and Moosehead Stew, penciled and inked this most awesome guest strip! Her inspiration? Being stuck at San Diego Airport. “They just want to fly. And so do I.” Alina and the fabulous Layne eventually made it onto a non-paper airplane and sped away home, leaving me with this awesome strip to color and a big heap of “Miss them!”

The Weregeek crew shared the booth with us at San Diego Comic-Con International last week, which helped make our fourth year exhibiting there monstrously geektastic. But there was lots of icing on the cake that was Comic-Con.

We are at the monster mother of a convention known as San Diego Comic-Con! We’re sharing Booth 5015 with the fabulous Alina and Layne of Weregeek. Concentrated monster geekly goodness!

The Little Zombies also love Pin the Tail on the Undead Donkey.

San Diego Comic-Con begins next week. The Little Vampires and their friends from Weregeek will be at Booth 5015, near Artist Alley and (thankfully) close to the convention center Starbucks. Be sure to make time to come see us! (Map below)

We’re not too far from our friends at Monster Commute, who are at Booth 4207. The publishers of my comic book, Project Elohim, will be premiering issue 7 at the Strange Matter Small Press table, K04. While in Small Press, take a gander at the amazing work from A Wave Blue World (K11), Binary Winter (K08), Monkey Minion Press (N13), and Super Searnold (K03). And, of course, make sure you spend lots of time at the Webcomics Pavilion. Now I know better than to be hatin’ on Twilight. But the whole sparkle thing is just sooooo easy to poke fun at.

I apologize for the lack of color. The hard drive on my desktop machine melted like a wet witch in Oz, vaporized like a red shirt on the Enterprise, and shuffled off its mortal coil like a Norwegian Blue parrot.

It done died.

Like my vampire friends, my desktop machine will rise again! Until then, I’m going to learn how to use Photoshop efficiently on my laptop. Right after I stop hyperventilating about losing my main computer two weeks before San Diego Comic-Con.

The Little Vampires and their friends love Independence Day in the U.S. Wolfie loves to BBQ with his family, Frank loves the fireworks, and the Little Vampires love wearing their little tricorner hats. Because nothing is cooler than a tricorner hat.

This week’s strip is an homage to Willard’s The Spirit of ‘76, an iconic American painting. I never really analyzed the work before, but the more I examined it, the more I came to realize that this piece was Willard’s love note to the American spirit. And according to him, this spirit turns toothless old men into constipated percussionists. It makes middle aged men put on aerobics headbands and decide, “Now is the time to learn the flute!” And it makes dying soldiers wave their hats and mutter a weak “hurrah.” Who needs medical assistance when the healing power of fife and drums is marching by?

My interpretation is open to interpretation, of course.

My country is not the only fabulous entity celebrating a birthday. Today is my husband James’s birthday. And he is a fabulous entity indeed. You can wish him a happy birthday in the comments, or by following him on Twitter (@jhicks).

If the Fourth of July wasn’t coming up, I would have done a strip to acknowledge the World Cup. I’m very proud of the performance of the U.S. team, and look forward to their next go round on the world stage. Congrats to all the countries that have made it this far. I’m looking at you Germany, I know I’ve got fans there.

Because they are so small, the sun doesn’t even bother burning the Little Vampires. So they love going flip flop sailing with their friends.

I had so much fun trying out his art style, a style which leans heavily towards the awesomest side of things. It’s summer, which means it’s time for the Little Vampires to go on vacation. They love going camping with their friend Little Bigfoot, even if he gets overexcited when it comes to roasting marshmallows.

I’ve been playing with the Copic Markers again. I’m also trying to get the hang of using a brush pen for inking. I like to think this practice benefits y’awl because it makes me get better at sketching your requests. Or maybe I just like a good ink manicure.

Thanks to everybody that stopped by the table at this past weekend’s Sac-Con! Our next show is the big daddy of comic-cons, San Diego Comic-Con International. I’ve got tons of ideas for art prints, to many to ever actually get done by show-time. But I’d love to know what you’d like to see me draw. It doesn’t have to be a Little Vampires print, though I’d love to do that. What would you like me to draw and color and get printed in time for Comic-Con?

Don’t cosplay as a Ghostbuster if you’re friends with a ghost.

There was a lot of awesome cosplay at Phoenix Comicon this past weekend. There were Ghostbusters, there were Browncoats, anime costumes out the wazoo, and the kind of costumers that you’d want to sit and drink a relaxing malt beverage with.

I got my picture taken with someone who was cosplaying as Felicia Day. The resemblance was uncanny.

We shared a booth with Alina Pete of Weregeek. She got some fan cosplay love from Felicia Jay, Felicia Day’s avian cousin.

But my favorite cosplayer was this Bulgarian robot football fan and monster abductee that was dressed as Daniel Davis of Monster Commute.

I can’t seriously describe how amazing Phoenix Comicon was. Thanks to everyone that stopped by the table. Boomshanka thanks and hugs to all the fans that stopped by to give the love. Both Alina and I have the greatest fans, hands down.

Speaking of fans, James and I are finally heading back to Sacramento! It crushed us having to cancel our appearance there in January, so we’re coming up for this weekend’s Sac-Con. Can’t wait to see my NorCal peeps!

We are headed to Arizona this weekend for the Phoenix Comicon. We had a blast at last year’s show, and this year will be triply awesome. One, because we’ll get to see our AZ fans again. Two, because we’ll get to see our AZ friends again, like Daniel Davis of Monster Commute. And three, because we’re sharing the booth with our friend Alina Pete of Weregeek fame. Booth 306 will be a rockin’ with monstrous geekatude. Be there, or you will lose geek points!

So this week’s strip shows what the Little Vampires will be up to while we’re working at the convention. I normally color the strip using Photoshop, but I got some shiny new markers that I was dying to try out. It was nice to take a simpler approach to coloring (I usually agonize over every pixel). Let me know what you think!

Thanks to everyone that bid on my sketch cards at the Comics for Cures eBay auction. I was afraid that I would only be contributing a minimum to the cause, being an unknown artist and all, but you guys told my fear to STFU. So thank you from the bottom of my heart.
